Watamu has many ways to explore it. What matters to us is how an experience feels once you are actually there, the pace, the atmosphere, the people around you and the small details that shape the moment. These are some of the things that define the way we approach Bahari Adventures.
What this means in practice
The five differences
Naturalist guiding, beyond a standard guided toury
The explanations come from real field experience and a background in biology, with a focus on how the mangrove actually functions as an ecosystem. Species, tides, roots and ecological relationships are approached in a more connected and understandable way, in both French and English.
Experiences that take you inside the mangrove
Most people discover the mangrove from a boat or a wooden walkway. Here, you move directly through it, in the water, between the roots, inside the ecosystem itself. The experience becomes much more immersive, physical and connected to what is actually happening around you.
A more personal way to explore
Even with larger groups, we keep the experience personal and well-paced. The mangrove is a calm environment, so the way we organise each experience matters as much as the experience itself.
More than just passing through
Our approach to the mangrove goes beyond the experiences themselves. We work alongside local restoration initiatives and communities connected to these ecosystems, while also trying to create something less visible but just as important: awareness, curiosity and a more personal connection to the mangrove.
Built around local people and knowledge
The experiences are built with the people and skills already connected to this coastline; local guides, local food, traditional boats and the communities that still live alongside these ecosystems. Keeping that connection local is simply part of how Bahari Adventures works.
Our approach
How we choose to approach these experiences
These ideas influence the way every Bahari Adventures experience is approached, from the atmosphere and pace to the people, places and details that shape the moment.
What we avoid
- Tours built around repetitive scripts instead of real interaction.
- Fixed routes designed more for logistics than for the place itself.
- Talking about conservation without any real connection to the ecosystems or communities behind it.
- Treating the mangrove as just a scenery or an exotic stop.
- Experiences that feel rushed, rigid or transactional.
Our approach
- Explanations adapted to what you observe along the way.
- Routes shaped by the tide, the conditions and what the mangrove feels like that day.
- Working alongside local restoration initiatives while helping people better understand and connect with the mangrove..
- Approaching the mangrove as a living ecosystem shaped by tides, species and constant movement.
- A more relaxed and human way of experiencing the mangrove.
The best way to understand it is to experience it
